It's more than a little ironic, isn't it, that Arizonans will work themselves into a frenzy -- to the point of passing a police-state ordinance like SB1070 -- because of a single case like the murder of border rancher named Robert Krentz, even though the crime is being widely blamed on Mexican drug cartel activity, which is actually a distinct issue largely separate from "illegal immigration". (Indeed, it's not even clear that in fact Krentz's murder came at the hands of Mexicans.)

And yet when a white supremacist drives up next to a mixed-race couple and opens fire with a shotgun because of their races, as happened last October, the case is greeted with a yawn. As was the man's arrest this week:

A man suspected of killing a 39-year-old woman in Phoenix in October was arrested in Livingston, Tenn., on Wednesday, a Livingston Police Department spokesman said Thursday morning. Schmidt is suspected of opening fire on the woman and her friend last October in what Phoenix police believe could have been a racially motivated crime.

Aaron Schmidt, 28 waived his extradition rights Thursday and can be picked up by the Phoenix Police Department, said Greg Etheredge, chief of the Livingston Police Department. Authorities believe Schmidt has been in Livingston since June.

The woman and a friend, Jeffrey Wellmaker, 48, were walking in Palma Park, on 12th Street and Dunlap Avenue about 1:30 a.m. Oct. 3 when a heavily tattooed, bald White man confronted them.

Wellmaker, who is Black, said the tattooed man yelled, "What are you doing with that White woman," according to Phoenix police at the time of the shooting.

The friends didn't respond and kept walking.

The tattooed man followed the pair for a couple blocks, police had said. By the time the couple reached Fourth Street and Puget Avenue, Wellmaker saw a white four-door newer model sedan with tinted windows drive past them.

In the passenger seat was the tattooed man. That's when Wellmaker said the passenger pulled out a shotgun and shot two blasts at the couple, according to police. One struck the woman and the second blast missed them.

The story was largely buried in the Phoenix newspapers -- perhaps because Wellmaker and the unidentified woman who was killed were homeless, instead of middle-class ranchers.

It's the same way that the case of Shawna Forde and her gang of killer Minutemen has been downplayed by the Arizona media, not to mention the national media, particularly Fox News.

It's the same way that report of camo-bedecked vigilantes firing on Latino border crossers received zero attention in any media beyond a handful of blogs:

Sheriff Antonio Estrada said that according to his department’s incident report, five undocumented migrants had crossed into the United States and were walking through a canyon around 5 a.m. on Friday when two unidentified males wearing camouflage clothing shot at them with a high-powered rifle.

“The victims claimed no demands were made. They were just walking and fired upon,” said Estrada, who added that the group had not been robbed. Estrada said that when the group ran, one of the men, Manuel Esquer Gomez, 45, from Nogales, Sonora sustained a gunshot wound to the left forearm.

As the group continued, the men stumbled upon skeletal remains of what they thought were two people.

While little is known about the attackers, Sheriff Antonio Estrada has stated that “[i]t’s perturbing to hear of people with high-powered rifles and camouflage. It raises some real red flags.” He also told KVOA that the shooters might have been U.S. citizens. “I hate to think that is what we’re looking at but we’re not going to dismiss any possibilities,” Estrada stated. “They may be individuals who may be hunting illegal border crossers. That’s really a big concern for us.”

Arizona has a white supremacist problem -- one that has been exacerbated by the nativist immigrant-bashing that has been part and parcel of the right-wing approach to the issue in Arizona. Instead of inverting the reality, at some point they're going to have to face up to it -- especially because, eventually, Latinos and homeless white people are not going to be the only victims.

The National Tea Party Federation expelled the Tea Party Express this week over how to handle racist views. Tea Party Express leader Mark Williams decided that it was time for them to be honest about their racism and to come out of the closet and say what they really mean. And Mark did so by writing a satirical letter to President Abraham Lincoln about what "colored people" want.

No No No says the National Tea Party Federation. You don't call them "colored people". That's highly offensive.You have to respect them by calling them "people of color". This is an election year and the National Tea Party Federation, made up of former Republican leaders like Newt Gingrich and Dick Army, understand that overt racism doesn't win elections. Their position is to hide the racism, stay in the closet, and be politically correct. Don't say what you really think. So the National Tea Party Federation expelled the Tea Party Express because they refused to lie about how they really feel.

The Republican Party completely understands that there is a difference between what you do and what you say. The Republicans get it! They have a person of color, Michael Steele, as the Republican National Committee Chairman. And even though Mr. Steele had a little problem with RNC money paying to take a group of Christian conservatives to a lesbian bondage themed sex club, Mr. Steele keeps his job; possibly sending a message to the political left that there might be a place for affirmative action in the Republican Party.

So who is right? Do voters respect honesty?
Or is it that smart politicians understand that you have to tell the voters what they want to hear? I say, they both are right. Honesty and sincerity is what wins elections. That's what the public wants. So once you learn how to fake sincerity and honesty, you have it made!

Now there are two Tea Parties. One for those who are openly racist and one for those who are not comfortable being openly racist. Who says the Tea Party isn’t a big tent? And they are all going to vote Republican this fall because even though they have a black chairman, they have a long history of racist voting records and legislation.

Although America has come a long way in electing our first mixed race president, we are not there yet. Racism is not over and Obama in the first. I remember as a child hearing discussions about if Kennedy could be an effective president because he is Catholic.Obamaa is the first, and when you are first, your culture is on trial. The issue of whether Blacks are ready to lead America, especially during these troubled times.

Think about it. What are the Republicans running on? Do you think they are running on their record of accomplishment? Even they don’t say that! So it’s a good thing in my opinion to get the whole racial thing out in the open and talk about it. Because in order for racism to really go away, we have to merge our cultures and both sides will have to give up segregationist thinking. And it’s going to take some time before we get there.

But I personally an not allow racial issues to distract me in choosing my leaders. What matters to me in this election is that we are in tough times and I want to choose the candidate who is wisest and who is most likely to make the right choices that get us from where we are to where we need to be. So my criteria is based on who has the best plan? Convince us that you can make it happen. I want someone with a deep respect for reality and who understands that if you don’t get right with reality, that there are consequences. You want my vote then inspire me with your vision of the future. Is your vision “Star Trek”? “The Matrix,” or “Planet of the Apes”? I want to hear “Star Trek”.

Civil Rights? What Civil Rights?

Let us pause for a moment here to praise a state for standing up for what we quaintly used to call "civil rights." You remember those? You remember the days before we were all suspects in crimes that hadn't occurred but, boy, oh, boy, they sure might? The Rude Pundit thinks there was a brief period between about 1975 and 2000 when that was actually true. Oh, what fun we had.

Now, amid Arizona's "The Constitution can blow a cactus" show-your-papers law and the support it's been getting from other states (not to mention piquant bits of spicy bullshit like Louisiana's Jesus wants you locked and loaded law), it's almost touchingly nostalgic, a bit retro, if you will, for a state legislature and governor to actually tell police, "No, that's a bit too far."

In New York, despite the amount of spittle flying out of New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg's mouth, Governor David Paterson is going to sign a law that says the police can't keep a database of the names, addresses, and Social Security numbers of every single person they stop and frisk. While "stop and frisk," as the stopping and frisking is called, is still quite a ways over the line of "innocent until proven guilty," at the very least, the cops won't be able to have your name on file so that every time there's a crime in your neighborhood, they come to question or arrest you for suspicion.

As for "stop and frisk," according to the NYPD's own records, "Last year, the police made a record 581,000 stops, bringing the tally since 2004 to nearly three million. Yet more than 85 percent of the stops never led to an arrest or a summons." You got that? In one year, the police intimidated nearly half a million people who didn't even have some weed on them. Oh, and 90% of the people stopped are non-white. And once they do that, the police wanted to keep your info on record forever.

Of course the cops are upset. Of course Bloomberg is upset. Surely, lots of people are willing to give up their rights in order to feel vaguely more safe. But let's let the mayor rather enthusiastically paint the picture of the future in his response to the law: "And what's wrong with keeping the data? We have data on everything. You wait until we have facial recognition software, and somebody's going to have a record of every person that walks down by your house. You just point a camera at them, the software will do it. That's coming. I mean, these days of, we put license plates on your car. You can read those by computer now, and we know where you're driving. Cell phones, everybody knows where you are."

And you know what? He's right. Feel safer?
